Women's mental health needs are unique. Tasked with balancing motherhood, running a home, and professional careers...women must take on a superhuman role.

As a woman today, you face no shortage of challenges and demands. Unrealistic expectations are forced by relentless marketing to be beautiful and successful, combined with the pressures of simultaneously being prosperous in managing professional and home careers. It's not any wonder many women feel overwhelmed, stressed and tired.

There's no doubt that women face enormous stress. Feeling confident, balanced, and secure can be challenging when juggling endless tasks. Seeking counseling for women can help you rediscover your happiness and learn healthy coping skills for successful living. Deciding to seek treatment can be an essential first step in healing that women should feel proud of.

Women's mental health symptoms are different than men’s. Counseling for women must directly address those needs.

Women and men experience symptoms differently when they experience mental health symptoms. Women more commonly experience some conditions, such as depression and anxiety. Certain types of unique women's mental health conditions do not afflict men. These conditions include disorders driven by women's hormones and/or child-bearing. These include:

·       Perinatal Depression: Often called postpartum depression, these depressive symptoms occur during or after pregnancy and can range from mild to severe.

·       Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder: PMDD includes symptoms similar to premenstrual syndrome (PMS) but is more serious. PMDD causes severe irritability, depression, or anxiety a week or two before your period starts. Symptoms usually go away two to three days after your period starts.

·       Perimenopause-Related Depression: These depression symptoms occur as you near menopause. In fact, perimenopausal women are as much as four times as likely to develop depressive symptoms.

Signs and symptoms you may benefit from counseling for women:

Women and men can develop the same mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, relationship issues, poor self-esteem, or feeling overwhelmed by the demands of life. But often, how women experience symptoms can be different. Some common symptoms include:

·       Persistent sadness or feelings of hopelessness

·       The use of alcohol and/or drugs is becoming a problem

·       Changes in eating or sleeping habits

·       Appetite and/or weight changes

·       Decreased energy or fatigue

·       Excessive fear or worry

·       Seeing or hearing things that are not there

·       Extremely high and low moods

·       Aches, headaches, or digestive problems without a clear cause

·       Feeling irritable

·       Withdrawal from friends and families

·       Not performing well in work or school

·       Suicidal thoughts

Women have a tendency to turn their symptoms inward. This means women are more likely to blame themselves for how they feel. Women will withdraw more and have more persistent feelings of sadness. Women tend to take their symptoms out on themselves. Men are more likely to turn these feelings outwards. Men are more likely to blame others, feel angry and irritable, and take these symptoms out on others around them.

Women are also more likely to be victims of rape or domestic violence. You should not face these life challenges alone.

Counseling for Women Treatment Options:

At Everthrive Counseling, our specially trained women's mental health counselors are experts in supporting the unique needs of women. We employ a variety of therapy approaches designed to address your individual needs. Our counselors can offer treatment options such as:

·       Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This approach helps you increase your awareness about thoughts and beliefs about the trauma. Your counselor will help you gain the skills to challenge thoughts in a way that allows you healthily react to emotional triggers. CBT is highly effective and easy to learn.

·       Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT): SBFT is a short-term approach that helps you to focus on the solutions to problems, not the problems themselves. The focus is on positive psychology principles and practices- hope, positive emotion eliciting, goal-directed, and future-oriented. You are empowered to tackle all the challenges life throws at you!

·       Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT): Similar to CBT, this approach aims to teach you how to live in the moment, develop healthy ways to cope with stress, and regulate emotions. The focus is to learn mindfulness skills to manage those difficult emotions. You'll learn easy-to-use skills that will give you back your power.

·       Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): Trauma is something many women face in life. If trauma has touched your life and you are struggling to cope, EMDR might be the right approach, as it is highly effective in treating trauma.

·       At Everthrive, we know you need a tribe of support. We welcome participation in the session from your spouse, partner, or other family members who are essential to helping you work through any issues.
